Il progetto sviluppa il valore pedagogico dell’architettura come capacità di interpretare i caratteri del luogo. L’area si trova nel punto di passaggio dalla collina alla piana ed è caratterizzata da un suolo che dalla strada si alza per 10 mt verso il bosco, permettendo così di scorgere i profili montuosi. Il progetto è fondato sulla modellazione della topografia attraverso una serie di terrazzamenti che offrono un giardino autonomo a ogni aula garantendo la sicurezza della scuola in un rinnovato rapporto con la terra. Ogni ambiente ha un contatto diretto con giardini e orti che traducono il legame tra Abruzzo e agricoltura in uno strumento di apprendimento. Le tre coperture lignee sorrette da colonne albero – provenienti dai boschi abruzzesi – disegnano una linea d’orizzonte che rende visibile il Gran Sasso da ogni spazio interno.

L’approccio si legge sia in senso orizzontale-planimetrico (le connessioni) che in sezione (il passaggio da collina a pianura con sequenze di boschi, prati, sentieri, terreni agricoli): un piccolo bastione protegge il lotto con una decisa increspatura del suolo formando uno spazio utilizzabile come playground e luogo collettivo. Da questo suolo artificiale si entra nello spazio complesso – dove la comunità incontra la scuola e viceversa – di palestra/auditorium/biblioteca. Figurativamente questa condizione è definita da una sequenza di piani sovrapposti, percorribili, coronati dallo sbalzo della copertura-serra. Tale elemento fuori scala ha il compito di marcare il cuore del nuovo complesso e di stabilire le connessioni con la collina retrostante (che interferisce con l’orizzontalità del segno), con le querce (che pareggia in altezza) e con le montagne sullo sfondo. Sotto la pensilina e sopra la copertura si costruisce uno spazio in-between che esprime un doppio principio: gli edifici nascono dal suolo e contribuiscono a evidenziare un rinnovato andamento del terreno, mentre le coperture configurano uno sky-line percepibile da lontano.

The project develops the pedagogical value of architecture as the ability to interpret the characters of the place. The area is located at the point of transition from the hill to the plain and is characterized by soil that rises 10 meters from the road, allowing to see the profiles of the mountain. The project models the topography through a series of terraces that offer an independent garden to each classroom and guarantee the safety of the school, in a renewed relationship with the land. Each environment has a direct contact with the gardens that reinterprets the connection between Abruzzo and agriculture into a learning tool. The three wooden roofs supported by the columns – that come symbolically from the Abruzzo woods – draw a horizon line that makes the Gran Sasso visible from each internal space.

The approach can be read both in a horizontal-planimetric sense (the connections) and in section (the transition from the hill to the plain with sequences of woods, meadows, paths, agricultural land): a small bastion protects the lot with a strong ripple in the ground forming a lowered space that can be used as a playground and a collective place. From this artificial ground the visitors can enter the complex space – where the community meets the school and vice versa – of the gym, the auditorium and the library.

Figuratively, this condition is defined by a sequence of overlapping, walkable floors, crowned by the overhang of the greenhouse roof. This out-of-scale element has the task of marking the heart of the new complex and to establish new connections: with the hill behind (which interferes with the horizontality of the sign), with the oaks (taking from them the same height), with the mountains in the background. Under the shelter and above the roof, an in-between space expresses the double theme of the project: the buildings arise from the ground and defining a renewed layout of the land, the roofs configure a new sky-line that can be perceived from far away.
